Khao Sok National Park: An Honest Guide to Thailand’s Jungle Gem

Dramatic limestone cliffs at Cheow Lan Lake

Khao Sok National Park in Thailand — have you heard of it? If not, add it to your Thailand itinerary. I’d had Khao Sok on my radar for years, with photos that looked like something out of Jumanji. On my second trip to Thailand, I finally made it happen. After one week in the chaos of Bangkok, I was craving greenery, peace, and nature.

To be honest, I was physically and mentally exhausted after four months of traveling. I wasn’t in the best mood, so instead of chasing every activity, I treated Khao Sok as a retreat: resting, reading, getting a massage, joining a lake tour, and spending quiet time surrounded by nature. And that alone made it worth it.

What is Khao Sok National Park?

Khao Sok is one of Thailand’s most spectacular national parks, famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, ancient rainforest, and stunning lake landscapes. It’s often compared to Guilin in China or Ha Long Bay in Vietnam — but without the crowds.

  • 📍 Location: Surat Thani Province, southern Thailand (between Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Samui).
  • 🌳 Size: About 739 km² of protected rainforest, rivers, caves, and karst mountains.
  • 💧 Cheow Lan Lake: The park’s crown jewel, created by the Rajjaprabha Dam in 1982.
  • 🐘 Wildlife: Gibbons, hornbills, snakes, and even wild elephants (though sightings are rare).
  • 🌺 Flora: One of the oldest rainforests on Earth (over 160 million years old), home to rare plants like the giant parasitic Rafflesia kerrii flower.

There is also a small village called Khao Sok within the park, with hostels, resorts, restaurants, and travel agencies. This is the main hub where buses, minivans, and taxis stop.

Why Visit Khao Sok National Park?

Khao Sok’s lush jungle scenery — wild, green, and peaceful

During my month in Thailand, I met many travelers — but only a few had planned to visit Khao Sok. It’s still quieter compared to Phuket, Krabi, or Chiang Mai, which makes it feel special.

For me, it was about slowing down and enjoying the scenery. Many travelers stay 2 nights just to do the lake tour (which is already a huge highlight), but I stayed 4 nights — and it felt right.

If you’re after nightlife or parties, this isn’t the place. But if you want jungle air, dramatic landscapes, and peace, Khao Sok is perfect.

Top Things to Do in Khao Sok National Park

The Iconic Cheow Lan Lake Tour

Floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake — book a day tour or stay overnight for the full experience

This is the highlight — you can’t leave without it. Cheow Lan Lake is an artificial reservoir formed when the Rajjaprabha Dam was built in 1982 to supply hydroelectric power. Its emerald waters are framed by 300-meter limestone cliffs, part of a karst system that is over 250 million years old — older than the Amazon rainforest.

  • The lake is dotted with floating bungalows.
  • It covers 165 km² and is considered one of Thailand’s most beautiful landscapes.
  • Around 100,000 visitors explore it each year.

You cannot explore the lake on your own — tours are required and always guided. They can be booked online, through your accommodation, or with travel agencies in the village (usually 1–2 days in advance).

Options:

  • Day Trip: Boat ride, cave or viewpoint stop, swimming, and lunch at a floating bungalow. Includes transfers by minivan.
  • Overnight Tour: Stay in a floating bungalow, fall asleep to jungle sounds, and wake up to mist rising over the cliffs.

💡 Details:

  • Park entrance fee: ~300 THB (€8) cash, paid on the spot.
  • Day trips cost €40–60; overnight stays are higher.
  • Bring insect repellent, good shoes, sunscreen, a hat, swimwear, water, and a dry bag.

Jungle Hikes & Wildlife Watching

Guided treks (2 hours, full day, or overnight) take you deep into the rainforest. Expect monkeys, exotic birds, butterflies, and — with luck — wild elephants. Night safaris are also available.
Nearby elephant sanctuaries exist too, but be mindful: only support ethical ones where elephants are not chained, ridden, or forced to perform.

Canoeing or Tubing on the River

Floating down the Sok River in a canoe or on a tube is one of the most fun and relaxing activities in Khao Sok. You’ll drift past lush jungle, spot monkeys in the trees, and feel like you’re inside a postcard.

Viewpoints

Khao Sok Viewpoint — endless jungle in every direction

Some viewpoints require multi-day tours (like Tarzan Viewpoint, famous for its panoramas), but there are simple ones too. I went to the Khao Sok Viewpoint, just a 10-minute walk from the paved road near the village. The view isn’t high up, but it overlooks endless jungle and limestone cliffs — simple, yet rewarding.

The village is small, but food is reliably good and you have several options.

My picks:

  • Tarzan Camp: Relaxed jungle vibe, Thai and Western food, rooftop terrace.
    Food: 3.5/5 | Atmosphere: 4/5 | Value: 4/5 | Service: 4/5
  • Silver Cliff Resort (my stay): I ate most of my meals here. The food was consistently delicious — Thai and Western dishes, with outstanding curries (the massaman curry is unforgettable). Peaceful and intimate atmosphere near the cliff and the river, cozy music, and kind staff. A bit remote from the village.

Hidden gem, peaceful, with kind staff and good breakfast.
My notes: Cleanliness: 5/5, Affordability: 5/5 , Location: 4/5, Service: 5/5

  • Tours: All lake trips, treks, and activities include transfers from and to your accommodation.
  • Taxis: Available but limited in the village.

Surat Thani is the closest hub, with an airport, bus station, and train station. Bus from Surat Thani to Khao Sok can be booked in advance as well on the spot.

  • 🚖 By Taxi: Private transfer from Surat Thani costs €60–80.

  1. How many days should I stay?
Most travelers stay 2 nights — enough for the lake tour. Staying 3–4 nights gives you more time to relax, hike, or try tubing.

2. Is Khao Sok worth visiting?
Absolutely. It’s one of Thailand’s most beautiful natural areas, yet less crowded than Chiang Mai or Phuket. If you love nature and adventure, you’ll love it. If you’re after nightlife, skip it.

3. Can I visit Khao Sok from Phuket or Krabi?
Yes — about 2–3h by van. Many travelers use it as a stop between the islands and Bangkok.

4. Is it safe to travel solo in Khao Sok?
Yes. The village is small, calm, and full of travelers. I felt safe walking alone, even at night. The only “issue” is barking dogs — just ignore them.

5. When is the best time to visit Khao Sok?
Dec–Apr (dry season) is best for trekking and tours. May–Oct (rainy season) makes the jungle lush and less crowded. I visited in July: a few showers, but overall beautiful weather for the lake.

My Honest Takeaway

Khao Sok National Park is breathtaking — but go with the right expectations. Don’t expect nightlife. Expect jungle, silence, and slow living.
Two days for the Cheow Lan Lake tour will already amaze you. But staying longer lets you feel its rhythm — time slows down, your head clears, and everything feels simpler.

For me, Khao Sok was the retreat I didn’t know I needed. Reading by the river, good food, a massage, nothing but birds and water.
Would I return? Absolutely. Some places you visit. Others stay with you.

If you’re planning a bigger Thailand itinerary, you might also enjoy my guides to Bangkok and Koh Tao — two completely different vibes, but equally unforgettable.
